The fight against the Kaijus is getting really intense. The latest chapter of Kaiju No. 8 features how Kikoru Shinomiya and Kafka Hibino handle the Kaiju in front of them. Unlike their other fights, the enemy that they are facing is Kaiju No. 9, one of the main and strongest Kaijus in the series.

After the introduction of Kikoru Shinomiya, the manga features how she developed and how we slowly learn more about her. With the release of Chapter 44, we get to discover who her mother was and how she died in the series.

Kikoru Shinomiya’s Mother Revealed

Kikoru’s mother is Hikari Shinomiya. Just like her father, Hikari Shinomiya is also a brave warrior who once fought the Kaijus.

She is the captain of the Second Division of the Defense Force. With her battle skills, she is wielding one of the Defense Force’s strongest weapons, Numbers Weapon 4.

Hikari Shinomiya Death

Just like the other warriors who put their lives on the line, Hiraki Shinomiya died after facing Kaiju No. 6.

The flashback of Chapter 44 states that due to the extensive cataclysms caused by Kaiju No. 6, lots of fighters bid farewell, including Kikoru’s mother.

Kikoru’s Promise to Her Deceased Mother

While the manga only shows a small portion of the mother-daughter relationship, their bond seems to be stronger than we thought.

Following Hikari Shinomiya’s death, Kikuro promised himself and her mother that she would become the strongest. She also swore to protect everyone and wouldn’t let any of her colleagues die on her watch.

More About Kaiju No. 8

For many years, grotesque, Godzilla-like monsters known as “kaijuu” have been sighted throughout Japan. To combat these beasts, an elite military unit known as the Defense Corps puts their lives on the line every day to protect civilians. When a creature is killed, “sweepers” from the Professional Kaijuu Cleaner Corporation are dispatched to dispose of its remains.

Kafka Hibino, 32, is dissatisfied with his job as a sweeper. He has always wanted to join the Defense Corps and kill kaijuus for a living. After a few failed attempts, he gave up on his dreams and resigned himself to mediocrity for the sake of a decent paycheck. Nonetheless, when an ambitious 18-year-old recruit named Leno Ichikawa joins his cleaning crew, Kafka is reminded of his desire to join the military once more.

Following a series of unfortunate events and an encounter with the junior sweeper, Kafka is attacked by a parasite-type kaijuu that forces its way into his mouth, transforming him into a humanoid monster. Kafka intends to use his newfound abilities to give his lifelong dream one last shot.
