It’s been almost 7 years since Monkey D. Luffy first activated his Gear 4th technique, and many fans are wondering if Luffy will be getting another upgrade. While Eiichiro Oda hasn’t confirmed it yet, the One Piece fandom seems to have found a clue to Luffy’s Gear 5 in the recently released chapter of the manga series.
One Piece Chapter 1042 has just been released and it features the continuation of the intense fight between Kaido and Luffy. While their fight was already reaching its conclusion, a member of the CP0 suddenly appeared behind Luffy. This unexpected appearance of the CP0 distracts Luffy, resulting in Kaido’s attack to hit and knock out the Straw Hat captain. As seen in the last spread of the chapter, it seems that Kaido’s attack put Luffy into another unconscious state.
If Kaido really did knock down Luffy, this could be the third time Kaido has defeated Luffy. The first time happened on the mainland of Wano, where Luffy was seen on his Gear 4th. And the second defeat happened when Kaido knocked him out of the flying island of Onigashima.
One Piece introduced Kaido as the “Strongest Creature” in the series, and if Luffy defeated Kaido by only using his 4th gear, it would look like a joke. Obviously, Luffy needs to get another power upgrade to defeat Kaido, just like how Law and Kid defeated Big Mom using their awakening.
Everyone is waiting to see Luffy transform into his Gear 5, but unfortunately, it’s not yet happening. However, manga fans discovered some clues in One Piece Chapter 1042 that could lead to Luffy’s Gear 5.

Activating Gear 5 could potentially increase his chance to win against Kaido. While there is still no confirmation about this, many fans theorize that Luffy’s next power-up will be his Devil Fruit Awakening. Using awakening to defeat Kaido will totally make sense.
